Mahonia shrubs are common around Lake Como. They are holly-like evergreens, hardy and not fussy about where to grow. They are also known as barberry.
I have mahonia on the stony soil in full sun, and I have it on heavy clay in the shade. Both do just fine.
The shrubs are in blossom now, exploding with clusters of small yellow flowers. Bees love them!
Mahonia that grows in a shaded spot is slightly behind in development than the one exposed to full sun. You can see that some clusters are still green.
For me it means that I will enjoy them for a longer time!
